A lot of the harmonic feel for the song comes from the initial chord, Am6. This chord then alternates with E7. I sometimes play this slightly differently by substituting the E7 for a Bm6. You’ll hear Joe Pass doing this in the version in the recomended listen. It gives for a nice root movement from the A to the B
