The usual key for Lover Man is F, however I’ve transposed it to D for the guitar to make more use of open strings. Also, if you come to place the melody on top of the chords it will sit better in this key. Be aware, there are a lot of chords in this tune! You’ll see the by the length of the chord chart. Learn it step by step and you’ll be fine. Particular parts that I like are the D7#9 at measure 5 which gives a great bluesy feel and also the falling lines in the middle section – F#m – F#(maj7) – F#m7 – B7 – and also – Em – Em(maj7) – Em7 – A7. It’s little sections like these that add interest and motion to the progression.
